Getting there and the terminal

The ferry port of Køge lies on Køge Bugt, a good 40 km south of Copenhagen. For your sat nav, enter Baltic Kaj 1, 4600 Køge; this address applies for both cars and foot passengers. Coming from Germany, you reach Zealand via Rødby (ferry from Puttgarden) on the E47, or via Gedser (ferry from Rostock) on the E55, with both motorways passing Køge. Without a car, you can reach the port by train to Køge Station and bus route 106, which is timed to match ferry departures and arrivals. There's parking with a two-hour limit in front of the terminal, and unrestricted parking near the station.

In keeping with the night sailing, the terminal grounds only open at 21:30 and are staffed from 22:00, so there's no point arriving earlier. The departure is after midnight, so the timetable lists it under the date of arrival: check carefully when booking which evening you need to be in Køge.

Check-in and departure

With a car up to 3.5 t, as a foot passenger or with a bicycle, you need to be checked in at Køge at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure; this applies equally to Standard, Flex and Lowprice tickets. Lorries, buses, semi-trailers, accessible vehicles, electric cars with a reserved charging space and foot passengers who need assistance require 30 minutes, and dangerous goods 60 minutes on this route. The scheduled departure time is always what counts, even if the ferry is running late. Authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, so have your national ID card or passport ready.

On board

The Hammershus, a combined freight and passenger ferry operated by Bornholmslinjen, runs on this route. On board, the Bistro Provianten serves smørrebrød, burgers, coffee and sweet treats from early morning until late at night, along with newspapers and magazines. Since the crossing takes up half the night, the cabin question is the key one here: Bornholmslinjen sells cabins in addition to the ticket for Køge - Rønne, and if you skip one, you'll spend the night in the seating areas. Special cabin tickets are available for passengers with disabilities, requested from the ferry company by the day before at the latest.

Vehicles, bikes and pets

The Hammershus takes cars, motorbikes, bicycles, motorhomes and vehicle-and-trailer combinations. The vehicle fare depends on length and height; car fares apply up to 1.95 metres in height, above which you book the taller-vehicle class, and trailers are booked separately by length. Arrival and onward travel

The ferry reaches Rønne on Bornholm's west coast early in the morning. Vehicles to and from Køge use the Tysklandsvej access point in Rønne, while foot passengers use the terminal at Dampskibskajen 5. From there it's only a few minutes into town, and the whole island is within half an hour's drive. At this early hour, holiday-let owners and shops are usually still closed, so breakfast at the harbour is the typical way to start the day. Tickets and fares

Bornholmslinjen offers four fares: Lowprice is the cheapest, changeable only for a fee and non-refundable. Flex can be changed to another departure free of charge up to sailing time, but is also non-refundable. Standard is refundable for a fee and can be rebooked up to three months later, while StandardPLUS is refundable free of charge and gives priority boarding and disembarkation.
