What the ferry to Denmark costs

The ferry to Denmark from Germany starts at €48 for a one-way car crossing over the Fehmarn Belt, and from €65.30 from Rostock. These prices already include the occupants, as the car is what's charged. On the Danish island routes, the crossing costs a fraction of that: Bøjden - Fynshav starts at 139 DKK, and the Molslinjen high-speed ferries across the Kattegat start at 249 DKK. The long direct route to Bornholm, on the other hand, has no upper limit.
What determines the price
A ferry ticket has no list price, only a starting price. Every departure has a limited quota of cheap tickets, and once it's sold, the booking moves into the next price bracket. That's why the same crossing can cost a fraction on a Tuesday morning in March compared with a Saturday afternoon in late July.
Then there are three factors you control yourself: the vehicle and its length, the fare level and the number of people. On all the routes listed here, the car is the unit charged, and occupants are included - up to nine people with Scandlines and the Molslinjen brands, up to five with Bornholmslinjen.
The fare levels with Scandlines
Scandlines sells the crossing in three levels, which differ only in flexibility, not in the ship or the space on board.
- Low Price: the cheapest ticket, bookable online only and valid only for the booked departure. Neither changeable nor refundable; upgrading to a more flexible fare is possible for a fee.
- Standard: valid for the booked departure and any other departure the same day. Rebooking costs €30, and a refund is only available with the ticket refund service added at booking.
- Flex: guaranteed space on any departure on the booked day and 90 days beyond, free rebooking and refunds, priority boarding and a free drink or 20% off on board.
Buying at the port instead of online costs noticeably more: the port price for a Standard ticket from Puttgarden starts at €111, versus €61.10 online.
Vehicle length, motorbikes and bicycles
The base price applies to cars up to 6 metres long. Beyond that, Scandlines automatically applies a length surcharge from €30 per extra 2 metres. The total length measured includes anything that sticks out, such as bike racks, rear boxes and tow bars. What this means for campers is covered in our guide Motorhome to Denmark.
On two wheels or on foot, it gets noticeably cheaper. The motorbike ticket across the Fehmarn Belt starts at €31.70 and includes three people, as long as the bike and any trailer stay under 2.5 metres. Foot passengers travel with the day ticket for €22 return, with a €3 surcharge for a bicycle. From Rostock, the same tickets are €43.50 and €31.
Prices on the Danish island routes
Within Denmark, you pay a fraction of what the Baltic crossing costs. On Bøjden - Fynshav, the Lavpris fare starts at 139 DKK, with the refundable Standard ticket at 242 DKK. For Spodsbjerg - Tårs, Langelandslinjen lists a Standard ticket at 312 DKK. On both routes, children up to 11 accompanied by a paying adult travel free.
The Molslinjen high-speed ferries across the Kattegat, meaning Aarhus - Odden and Ebeltoft - Odden, start at 249 DKK on the Lavpris fare and 524 DKK on Standard; a trailer costs an extra 449 to 749 DKK depending on size. For Bornholm, the sums are different: via Ystad, the high-speed ferry is available from 99 DKK, while the direct crossing from Sassnitz starts at 699 DKK.
Combo tickets towards Sweden
If you're continuing through Denmark on to Sweden, it's worth buying the second crossing at the same time. Scandlines sells the Puttgarden - Rødby crossing bundled with the Øresund Bridge from €101.25 on the Standard fare, or from €124.25 from Rostock. There's a matching bundle with the ferry route Helsingør - Helsingborg, from €99.75 and €122.75 respectively. For motorbikes, both combinations are noticeably lower.

Follow these tips to keep the cost of the crossing to Denmark down.
Book early
Scandlines recommends booking Low Price at least 3 days before departure, and at least 90 days ahead for the lowest prices.
Choose off-peak times
The cheapest allocations tend to sit on weekdays, early morning, late evening and overnight. Being flexible pays off.
Watch your vehicle's length
The base price covers cars up to 6 m. Above that, Scandlines charges from €30 per extra 2 metres, measured including all attachments.
Pick the right combo

What determines the price of the Denmark ferry?+
Four things: the route, the vehicle including its length, the fare level and the timing. Operators sell a fixed quota of cheap tickets per departure, and once that's sold, the price rises with occupancy. Summer holidays, weekends and afternoon departures are the most expensive. What's the difference between Low Price, Standard and Flex?+
The difference is flexibility, not the ship. Low Price is online only and valid only for the booked departure, neither changeable nor refundable. Standard is valid for any departure on the same day and can be changed for a fee. Flex allows free changes and refunds up to 90 days after the booked departure and comes with priority boarding.
Do I pay more for my motorhome?+
Yes. All base prices quoted apply to cars up to 6 metres long. Above that, Scandlines adds a length surcharge from €30 per extra 2 metres, applied automatically at booking. Is the day ticket worth it?+
For a day trip, yes: it covers a return crossing on the same calendar day and costs noticeably less than two single tickets. On the way back, Scandlines issues a voucher at check-in that you can redeem on board or have refunded, plus up to 30% off at partner attractions. If you're staying longer, you'll need two single tickets or Easy Return instead.
What does my dog cost on the ferry?+
Dogs and cats are added as an extra at booking and cost a small surcharge depending on the operator, shown in the booking window. Can I cancel my ticket?+
That depends on the fare. The cheapest tickets are generally non-refundable, even when switching to another ticket type. With Scandlines, the Standard ticket is only refundable if you add the ticket refund service at booking; Flex is free to refund. On the Danish island routes, Standard is the refundable fare, usually for a fee.
