Puttgarden - Rødby
The ferry connection between Rødby on Lolland and Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn is one of the main links between Germany and Denmark.
It forms part of the so-called Bird Migration Route (Vogelfluglinie), connecting the German A1 motorway with Denmark's E47. The crossing takes around 45 minutes and ferries run around the clock. This is the fastest way to reach Denmark by ferry from Germany, and the route most travellers driving up from Central Europe will use.
Rostock - Gedser
Another key ferry connection links Gedser on Falster with Rostock in Germany.
This route is also operated by Scandlines and offers an alternative to the Bird Migration Route. The crossing takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, and the ferry carries both cars and foot passengers. It's a convenient option for travellers approaching from eastern Germany or further afield in Central Europe.
Ferries to Bornholm
This route is operated by Bornholmslinjen. The crossing takes about 3.5 hours. Extra sailings are added over the summer months.
The main connection to the island. The fast ferry crossing takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, the conventional ferry about 2.5 hours. Ystad is well connected to Copenhagen via the Öresund Bridge, making this a handy option if you're arriving via Sweden.
This ferry connection is an overnight option with a crossing time of around 5.5 hours. It particularly suits travellers coming from the greater Copenhagen area who prefer a relaxed overnight crossing.

Two direct Scandlines ferries cross the Baltic Sea: Puttgarden - Rødby over the Fehmarnbelt in around 45 minutes, and Rostock - Gedser to Falster in around 2 hours. A direct ferry to Bornholm runs from Sassnitz on the German island of Rügen. Within Denmark, island ferries such as Fynshav - Bøjden or Spodsbjerg - Tårs cut out long detours.
How long does the crossing to Denmark take?+
The shortest crossing is Puttgarden - Rødby at around 45 minutes, with a further hour and 40 minutes by car on to Copenhagen. Rostock - Gedser takes around 2 hours. The direct ferry to Bornholm from Sassnitz takes about 3.5 hours.
