By ferry to Denmark
Puttgarden - Rødby
The famous Vogelfluglinje crossing over the Fehmarn Belt has existed since 1963 and is now operated by the formerly state-owned ferry company Scandlines. Thanks to the use of so-called double-ended ferries, which can sail forwards and backwards, the crossing takes only 45 minutes, and loading and unloading at the port only 15 minutes. The onward drive to Copenhagen takes around 1 h 40 min.
Rostock - Gedser
The route from Rostock to Gedser (on the Danish island of Falster) is the oldest ferry connection from Germany to Scandinavia. The 50 km crossing runs from Rostock across Mecklenburg Bay to Gedser, Denmark's southernmost port. Scandlines currently runs ferries every two hours, with the crossing taking around 2 hours. The onward drive to Copenhagen takes around 1 h 45 min.
By ferry to Sweden
Travemünde - Malmö
Even though Malmö is technically in Sweden, geographically the city is really a suburb of Copenhagen. The direct route from Travemünde to Malmö with the ferry company Finnlines is therefore a pretty good match for a direct connection from Germany to Copenhagen. The crossing is an attraction in itself: shortly before entering the port of Malmö, you sail right under the Øresund Bridge, and the route into central Copenhagen then takes you back over this impressive structure. The onward trip from Malmö to Copenhagen, by car or public transport, takes only 40 minutes.
Travemünde - Trelleborg
The ferry route from Travemünde to Trelleborg, operated by TT-Line, is especially popular with travellers heading to Sweden. But it also suits anyone bound for Copenhagen well, since the drive from Trelleborg to Copenhagen takes only 50 minutes. TT-Line ferries sail several times a day, and the overnight crossings are particularly popular because they save a lot of time.
Rostock - Trelleborg
The route from Rostock to Trelleborg is also well suited for travelling to Copenhagen. Two operators, TT-Line and Stena Line, run this crossing, so it's worth comparing prices. By car, it takes only around 50 minutes from the ferry port in Trelleborg to central Copenhagen, and travelling on by train takes only a little longer.

Which ferry is the fastest way to Copenhagen?+
The fastest sea link is the Vogelfluglinje Puttgarden - Rødby crossing: you cross the Fehmarn Belt in around 45 minutes, and from Rødby it's about a further 1 hour 40 minutes by car into the city centre. Travellers from eastern Germany have the convenient alternative of Rostock - Gedser, from where it's around 1 hour 45 minutes on to Copenhagen.
Is there a night ferry towards Copenhagen?+
There's no direct night ferry to Copenhagen, but there are evening and overnight connections to southern Sweden, for example from Rostock and Travemünde to Malmö or Trelleborg. From Malmö you can reach Copenhagen via the Øresund Bridge in around 40 minutes, and from Trelleborg in about 50 minutes. That way you sleep through the crossing and start the morning refreshed.

For travellers from northern Germany, Puttgarden - Rødby plus the drive across Zealand is usually the most direct route.
