Ferries to Copenhagen
There are three ways to reach Copenhagen by ferry: via Rødby, via Gedser, or via southern Sweden and the Øresund Bridge.

Which route to Copenhagen is right for you
There is no direct ferry from Germany to Copenhagen. You either cross to Lolland or Falster and drive via Zealand into the city, or take a ferry to southern Sweden and drive back into Denmark over the Øresund Bridge. Which option is quicker depends on where you start.

Getting there from Hamburg, Kiel, Lübeck, Travemünde and Rostock
From Hamburg
From Hamburg it takes around an hour and a half to drive to Puttgarden on Fehmarn. The ferry to Rødby takes 45 minutes, and from there you drive via Lolland, Falster and Zealand to Copenhagen in under two hours. That is around half an hour faster than the overland route via Jutland and the Great Belt Bridge.
From Kiel
No ferry sails from Kiel to Denmark. Via Puttgarden - Rødby you reach Copenhagen in around three and a half hours: around 75 minutes to Puttgarden, a 45-minute crossing and under two hours from Rødby. The overland route via Jutland, Funen and the Great Belt Bridge takes barely longer and needs no ferry at all.
From Lübeck and Travemünde
From Lübeck you reach Puttgarden in around an hour, and with the ferry to Rødby you are in Copenhagen after around three and a half hours. The ferry port of Travemünde is around 20 minutes' drive from Lübeck's old town. From there, Finnlines sails to Malmö and TT-Line to Trelleborg, with a crossing of around nine hours. That makes it a good overnight ferry: leave in the evening, arrive in Sweden in the morning and drive over the Øresund Bridge to Copenhagen in under an hour.
From Rostock
From Rostock, Scandlines takes you to Gedser in two hours, and from there it is under two hours to Copenhagen. TT-Line and Stena Line sail to Trelleborg, with a crossing of around six to seven and a half hours depending on the departure. From Trelleborg it is then around 45 minutes to Copenhagen.
Via Denmark: Fehmarn Belt and Gedser
Puttgarden - Rødby
The Vogelfluglinie across the Fehmarn Belt has been running since 1963 and is now operated by Scandlines. Four double-ended ferries shuttle across the Belt, the crossing takes 45 minutes and the ferries run round the clock. From Rødby you drive to Copenhagen in under two hours.
Rostock - Gedser
The Scandlines ferries Berlin and Copenhagen sail between Rostock and Gedser on Falster. The crossing takes two hours, and from Gedser you are in Copenhagen in under two hours.
Via southern Sweden and the Øresund Bridge
Travemünde - Malmö
Finnlines sails from Travemünde to Malmö, with a crossing of around nine hours. From Malmö you drive over the Øresund Bridge to Copenhagen in around 40 minutes.
Travemünde - Trelleborg
TT-Line sails three times a day from Travemünde to Trelleborg, including overnight. The crossing takes around nine hours, and from Trelleborg it is around 45 minutes to Copenhagen.
Rostock - Trelleborg
TT-Line and Stena Line both offer several departures a day on Rostock - Trelleborg. Depending on the departure, the crossing takes around six to seven and a half hours; the overnight ferries leave late in the evening and arrive early in the morning. From Trelleborg you drive to Copenhagen in around 45 minutes.
