Getting there and the terminal
Ystad lies on Sweden's south coast, a good 60 kilometres east of Malmö. From Denmark, drive from Copenhagen across the toll Øresund Bridge to Malmö and continue on the E65 to Ystad; from Germany, come via Rødby or Gedser to Zealand and follow the same route. Bornholmslinjen's vehicle check-in is at Bornholmsgatan 1B, 271 39 Ystad, while foot passengers use the entrance at Hamntorget 2. Both are right by the port. Long-stay parking is available for a fee at Spanienfararegatan, at the terminal and at the service centre on Hamntorget, with short-term parking at Hamntorget.
Without a car, the train is the most reliable option: the Øresund train takes you from Copenhagen to Malmö, from where a regional train runs to Ystad. Alternatively, the Bornholm Expressen coach runs from Copenhagen and the airport via Ystad straight onto the ferry.
Check-in and departure
Ystad has the shortest deadline of all the Bornholm routes: with a Standard, Flex or Lowprice ticket, you need to be checked in with a car up to 3.5 t, as a foot passenger or with a bicycle at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure. Electric cars with a reserved charging spot, accessible vehicles, trucks, buses, trailers and foot passengers needing assistance need 30 minutes. The deadlines also apply if the ferry is delayed. Authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, and the police can check IDs when crossing into Sweden, so keep your ID card or passport within easy reach in your hand luggage.
On board
The route is served by the fast catamarans Express 1 and Express 5 from Bornholmslinjen. The Express 1 is 112.6 metres long, reaches speeds of up to 40 knots and was built by Incat in Tasmania; its car deck is the size of half a football pitch, with a lift connecting it to the passenger deck. On board you'll find Molly's Bistro with smørrebrød, French hot dogs and snacks, plus Barista's Coffee Shop. Eighty minutes is too short for a cabin, but long enough for a coffee with a view of the Baltic. If you want to charge on the catamaran, reserve a charging spot when booking; spaces are limited, and the check-in deadline then rises to 30 minutes.
Vehicle, bicycle and pets
The catamarans carry cars, motorbikes, bicycles, motorhomes and combinations. Arrival and onward travel
In Rønne, vehicles to and from Ystad use the Sverigesvej 1 access, and foot passengers the terminal at Dampskibskajen 5. Rønne is the island's largest town, its centre just a few minutes' walk from the port, and every point on Bornholm is within half an hour's drive. Tickets and fares
Bornholmslinjen offers four fares: Lowprice is the cheapest, changeable only for a fee and non-refundable. Flex can be changed free of charge to another departure up to the sailing time, but is also non-refundable. Standard is refundable for a fee and can be rebooked up to three months ahead, while StandardPLUS is free to refund, includes access to the commuter lounge and gives priority boarding and disembarking. It runs year-round and up to six times a day in summer, making it the most frequent connection to the island, and the only one where a missed sailing doesn't cost you the whole day.
Coming from Denmark, that means an overland leg first: from Copenhagen you cross the Øresund Bridge to Malmö and continue about 60 kilometres on the E65 to Ystad.
