Sassnitz - Rønne

Getting there and the terminal

The ferry doesn't depart from Sassnitz's town harbour, but from the ferry port of Mukran a few kilometres to the south. For your sat nav, enter Im Fährhafen 20, 18546 Sassnitz; typing just "Sassnitz" can easily send you to the wrong port. From Berlin you take the A11 and A20, from Hamburg the A20 to the Stralsund exit and on across the Rügen Bridge; both routes take around three hours. The terminal has short- and long-stay parking, the passenger terminal is within walking distance, and you can stop right in front of it for 30 minutes free of charge to drop off or pick up.

Without a car, you can reach the port on bus route 22, which runs year-round every day from the railway stations at Sassnitz, Prora and Binz to Mukran; from May to October, route 18 also runs from Sassnitz. Get off at the "Mukran Fährhafen" stop, from where it's around 200 metres to the Bornholmslinjen terminal. In summer and autumn, the RE27 train also links the ferry port directly with Bergen on Rügen on several days a week, where long-distance trains to Rostock, Hamburg and Berlin connect; you'll need a valid ferry ticket for this.

Check-in and departure

With a Standard, Flex or Lowprice ticket, you need to be checked in with a car up to 3.5 tonnes, as a foot passenger or with a bicycle at the latest 20 minutes before the scheduled departure. Electric cars with a reserved charging space, vehicles for passengers with disabilities, lorries, coaches, semi-trailers and foot passengers needing assistance need 30 minutes. These deadlines also apply if the ferry is delayed. There's no luggage service at Sassnitz or Rønne, so you carry your own luggage on board; the assistance service for mobility-impaired foot passengers offered at Rønne, Køge and Ystad isn't available at Sassnitz either. Authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, so keep your ID card or passport handy.

On board

The Hammershus and the Povl Anker serve the route. A little over three hours is long enough for a meal and short enough that no one needs a cabin. On the Hammershus, the Provianten bistro serves smørrebrød, burgers, coffee, soft-serve and sweets from early morning until late at night, plus newspapers and magazines. Vehicle, bicycle and pets

Both ferries take cars, motorbikes, bicycles, motorhomes and vehicles with trailers. Car fares apply up to 1.95 metres in height; taller vehicles and trailers are booked in the appropriate class by length, and details for campers are in our guide Motorhomes. Arrival and continuing your journey

The ferry arrives at Rønne on the west coast of Bornholm, the island's largest town. Vehicles from and to Sassnitz use the Tysklandsvej access in Rønne, while foot passengers use the terminal at Dampskibskajen 5. From there it's a few minutes into the centre, and every point on the island is within half an hour's drive. Tickets and fares

Bornholmslinjen offers four fares: Lowprice is the cheapest, changeable only for a fee and not refundable. Flex can be changed to another departure free of charge up to departure but is likewise not refundable. Standard is refundable for a fee and can be rebooked up to three months ahead, while StandardPLUS is free to refund and comes with priority boarding and disembarkation. Prices vary by low, mid and high season; you get the best price by booking early online, since the summer departures from Rügen in particular are in demand.
